Opportunities and Growth - Medical Technologies in the Leeds City Region

In autumn 2015, the UK Government announced Science and Innovation Audits (SIAs) to catalyse a new approach to regional economic development. SIAs enable local consortia to analyse regional strengths and identify mechanisms to realise their potential.

In the Leeds City Region, we focused on our strengths in medical technologies.

From the outcomes of the report, we believe the Leeds City Region is best positioned in the UK to transform the med tech sector: generating around an extra 4,000 jobs, taking employment in the sector to around 15,000 workers; and improving healthcare and patient outcomes.

The global market for new medical and healthcare products is growing rapidly and is expected to increase over the next five years, with a value that is anticipated to reach more than half a trillion dollars – driven by increasing and ageing global populations and the rise in levels of obesity and the prevalence of diseases such as diabetes, cancer and cardiovascular disease.
